When I was growing up we played a lot of card games and dominoes in my family and I was fascinated by the faces on the playing cards. Apparently I still am.

These four paintings draw their inspiration from seventeenth century European playing cards and represent the four loves - self regard, romantic love, eros and compassion.

The Owl Service

Watercolour on Paper

This painting was inspired by Alan Garner's classic book The Owl Service which is based around The Mabinogion. Such a compelling read I missed my train stop and had to walk home in the dark.

Watercolour on Paper

This is a rite of passage painting and marks my departure from a job I really didn't like. It's part of a sequence inspired by the Mithila Painters of India.
